Apophis is a well-known near-Earth asteroid that once drew global attention due to early predictions of a possible impact with Earth. Discovered in 2004, Apophis has an estimated diameter of about 370 meters, making it large enough to cause significant regional damage if a collision were ever to occur. Initial observations suggested a small chance of impact in 2029, which led to widespread concern and media coverage. However, after more precise calculations by scientists, including teams at NASA, the risk was ruled out. Apophis is now confirmed to safely pass Earth without collision. On April 13, 2029, Apophis will make an exceptionally close approach, passing at a distance of about 31,000 kilometers from Earth’s surface—closer than many geostationary satellites. This rare event will provide scientists with a valuable opportunity to study the asteroid’s structure, composition, and the effects of Earth’s gravity on its trajectory. Despite its intimidating reputation and name—derived from the Egyptian god of chaos—Apophis poses no threat to Earth for at least the next century. Today, it serves as an important example of how improved tracking and scientific analysis can turn fear into understanding.
