Greenland (local name: Kalaallit Nunaat) is the world’s largest non-continental island, lying between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Canada and northwest of Iceland . It covers a total area of 2.166 million square kilometers, nearly 80% of its land is covered by a thick permanent ice sheet, and two-thirds of the island sits inside the Arctic Circle with an extremely frigid polar climate . Only the narrow coastal strips in the southwest are ice-free and habitable.
