About スプライト (SPRITE)
This is an observation record of the upper-atmospheric electrical discharge phenomenon known as a "Sprite" (or "Red Sprite"), captured and posted by Daichi Fujii, a curator at the Hiratsuka City Museum. Key characteristics of Sprites include: Mechanism: A type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE) where an electrical discharge rapidly shoots upward from the tops of massive cumulonimbus clouds into the mesosphere (at altitudes of roughly 50 to 90 km), triggered by intense lightning strikes (especially strong positive cloud-to-ground strikes). Cause of the Red Color: High-voltage electrical excitation and ionization of nitrogen molecules present in the thin mesospheric air produce the characteristic red glow. Shape and Duration: They exhibit distinctive jellyfish- or tentacle-like shapes. Because the flash lasts only for a fraction of a second (a few to tens of milliseconds), they are virtually impossible to see with the naked eye and are typically captured using high-sensitivity cameras.
