Padparadscha Sapphire, 3.77 ct – Sri Lanka The Padparadscha rises to the top as the rarest and one of the most prized gemstones in the world! Primarily originating from Sri Lanka, this rare brilliance has also been found—more recently—in Madagascar. It is in Sri Lanka, at the heart of this rarity, that the Padparadscha takes its name from Sinhala, the local language, meaning “lotus flower.” Deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist culture, it symbolizes the divinity of enlightenment. This flower, displaying the same delicate pink hue, also embodies the divinity of enlightenment, along with the themes of purity, fertility, and eternity.   Sri Lanka is the oldest known source of sapphire since Antiquity. Its stones were traded in India, the Middle East, and even reached Europe. Many sapphires used in Byzantine jewelry are believed to have originated from Sri Lanka. This “island of gems” is still an important producer of sapphires today, and some of the largest high-quality sapphires ever discovered come from Sri Lanka.   From mining to export, the gemstone and jewelry industry is strictly regulated by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA). The NGJA enforces very strict regulations on mining, which is why most mining activities are still carried out by hand today. The vision of the NGJA is to place Sri Lanka in the international spotlight as a hub for gems and jewelry. By law, the authority requires that all gemstones and jewelry intended for export pass through its organization to ensure that only authentic items are exported.   Our stone is described by the GRS laboratory as type “Sunset.” “Sunset” refers to Padparadschas with medium-weak to strong saturation of predominantly orange with pink color.
