A Ponzi scheme is a long‑standing financial fraud whose core is "robbing Peter to pay Paul" – using new investors' money to pay high returns to earlier investors, creating an illusion of profitability, and thereby defrauding more funds. It was "invented" by the Italian speculator Charles Ponzi in 1919, who promised a 50% return in 45 days and attracted 40,000 investors.
